St. Mary of the Knobs is the oldest parish in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, founded in 1823.
When Founded in 1823, St. Mary of the Knobs was in the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky which had been established by Pope Pius VII in 1808. The Bardstown Diocese was 1 of only 5 diocese' in the United States: Baltimore, Boston, New York and Philadelphia were the other 4.
In 1834, the Diocese of Vincennes was formed by Pope Gregory XVI. It encompassed all of Indiana and the Eastern Third of Illinois (Website: Archdiocese of Indianapolis History).
The Diocese of Indianapolis was formed in 1898 and elevated to an Archdiocese by decree of Pope Pius the XII in 1944.
